So, what’s the story?

After ten beautiful years in Central Victoria, our family was hoping for an adventure. We discovered Bermagui, fell in love with a citrus orchard, and bought it sight unseen in a moment of reckless abandon.

We had often dreamt of a farm by the coast. We had often dreamt of a citrus orchard. We even had dreams of escaping to a fishing village, the kind that makes you feel empty handed when walking into the pub without a catch over your shoulder. We didn’t think we would ever find the three in one.

Welcome to Citrusbythesea, where perhaps you too will be inspired to dream big under a starry sky, or even work up the courage to leap into the unknown like we did. Because we all need time and space away from the grind to dream.

Bermagui

This forgotten NSW coast line feels like it stretches on forever, marked by distinctive spotted gum, pristine waters and energy from another time.

Our favourite family outing is Bermagui main beach. It is patrolled during the summer months with a gentle swell, perfect for small humans. The Blue Pool is a must for visitors, best enjoyed in morning light - beware high tide and rough seas, as this pool is not patrolled.

Camel Rock (a 10 minute drive north) is a spectacular spot, popular for surfers. To the south, Baragoot and Cuttagee beaches stretch for days. In the summer months, Cuttagee lake is a popular swimming spot for locals.

Bermagui punches above its weight with plenty of cafes, restaurants and food supply stores to choose from. Here are just a few:

The space

Nestled between the ocean and a private valley, Citrusbythesea is an escape where cockatoos flock, kangaroos hop and the roar of the ocean fills the night air.

Our simple barn style farm house is a sanctuary of peace and calm for up to 6 guests. More can sleep outside on the deep verandahs if you are game.

The house overlooks the orchard to the west featuring lemon trees, a lime tree we will slowly graft across the orchard, and a towering tree line of gums beyond. You’ll glimpse an ephemeral wetland we are working to bring back to its glory years - an important ecosystem buffering the valley that drains from the north to the ocean.

To the south-west is our shared dam, the perfect spot for a picnic or quiet time with a book or drink, watching the black swans come and go.

We keep a small veggie garden focused on greens and herbs - you’re welcome to harvest or even plant some of your favourites, if you’re feeling inspired to try your green thumbs.

During winter and colder months, relax in front of the indoor or outdoor fire. Watch the stars flicker while the ocean roars on.

We are working on a masterplan for the 15 acres including an orchard expansion, wetland restoration, niche forestry enterprise and production of botanicals/flowers
